Zahoor ul Akhlaq Gallery NCA cordially invites you to the opening reception of "Non Commissioned Historical Drawings by Ahmed Ali Manganhar"
For the past 16 years, I have lived in Lahore and away from Sindh, and the question of migration, exile, language, culture, place and history are always on my mind.
To find answers to these questions, I often visit Sindh and each visit brings another perspective to my self understanding and to my work.
From drawing on school slates to colonial oil paintings, from chalk drawings on black boards to drawings on paper, I have tried to trace the portrait of the land where I was born and raised. In my present work, all the historical images revolve around the images of a local traitor who was loyal to the English as he bartered away his land. The drawings are based on archival photographs of British colonialism in Sindh and are exaggerated by intuitive understanding.
